Floriography
What is floriography?
Floriography is the art of using specific blooms, colors, and presentations to communicate coded, unspoken messages
History of Floriography
Assigning meaning to flowers has ancient roots. Civilizations in Europe, Asia, and Africa assigned symbolic and religious meanings to plants for thousands of years.
A more modern interest partly stems from the "tulip mania" and court traditions in Constantinople and the Ottoman Empire, where secret floral codes were used among the gentry.
The practice peaked during 19th-century Victorian England, serving as a discreet way to express romantic or forbidden feelings, despite strict social etiquette.
Assignment of Meanings
Throughout any of these eras, a variety of meanings could be imparted, based on:
-
Flower Type: Different species convey distinct core emotions (e.g., roses symbolize love, lilies represent purity).
-
Color: Changing the hue alters the message; red usually means passion, while yellow often signifies friendship or joy.
-
Presentation: This relates to how a bouquet or arrangement was held or handed over (right hand for "yes," left for "no"), or whether it was presented upside down (likely, only in the case of a bouquet and not an arrangement) changed the interpretation.
